The first day of school is finally here
Parents of “littles” will wipe off their tears
The bus will arrive and off they’ll go
Learning new things they don’t yet know

New teachers and classmates and friends they will make
You can feel the excitement from the time they awake
New notebooks and pencils and supplies galore
All packed up waiting right by the front door

Will they remember their lunch and their teacher’s name?
Will they end their year different or the same?
How tall will they grow and what they will be?
Will they keep their grades above a C?

There’s excitement and newness yet the same ol’ routine
Lots of homework and studying for all the preteens
But off they will go – the first day of school
We’ll kiss them and tell them to follow the rules
